Mowat, A. P., Psacharopoulos, H. D., and Williams, R. (1976). Archives of Disease in Childhood, 51, 763. Extrahepatic biliary atresia versus neonatal hepatitis: review of 137 prospectively investigated infants. In a prospective regional survey of neonatal hepatitis syndrome 32 infants had extrahepatic biliary atresia (EHBA) and 103 had hepatitis. No cause for the lesion was found in infants with extrahepatic biliary atresia, but in 32 with hepatitis a specific cause was identified, 24 having genetic deficiency of the serum protein oc1-antitrypsin. No differences were observed in parental age, mother's health in pregnancy, month of birth, birth order, or sex of the infants. Familial idiopathic hepatitis occurred in 3 of 67 sibs of patients with idiopathic hepatitis, but the 33 sibs ofEHBA patients had no liver disease. Of the infants with hepatitis, 36 were of low birthweight, <2-5 kg, and 23 were born prematurely. Infants with biliary atresia were all of normal birthweight and only one was born prematurely. Consideration of clinical and biochemical abnormalities in the first 2 months of life showed no differences between the two groups except that infants with EHBA were

Application of ursodeoxycholic acid in hepatobiliary scintigraphy for neonatal hyperbilirubinemia: Comparison with phenobarbital
Introduction: Early differentiation of biliary atresia from neonatal hepatitis is of utmost importance, since on time surgery of biliary atresia significantly improves the outcome. Hepatobiliary scintigraphy is an integral part of diagnosis work-up of these patients; however its specificity for diagnosis of biliary atresia is suboptimal. In this study we evaluated t...

Aetiological factors were sought prospectively in 55 babies with extrahepatic biliary atresia, in 105 with neonatal hepatitis, and in 11 with intrahepatic biliary atresia, seen as a result of nearly complete ascertainment of these conditions in the State of Victoria between 1963 and 1974. In neonatal hepatitis infective causes were shown in 22 babies, galactosaemia in 6 and alpha1-antitrypsin d...

UNLABELLED Early differentiation of extrahepatic biliary atresia from intrahepatic cholestasis is important. Hepatobiliary scintigraphy is an excellent noninvasive investigation for ruling out extrahepatic biliary atresia. This study aimed at identifying the role of ursodeoxycholic acid (UDCA), a choleretic agent, in conjunction with hepatobiliary scintigraphy in differentiating extrahepatic bi...
متن کاملIdiopathic neonatal hepatitis or extrahepatic biliary atresia? The role of liver biopsy.
Cholestasis in early infancy represents a diagnostic dilemma and most of these infants suffer either from extrahepatic biliary atresia or idiopathic neonatal hepatitis. Differentiation between the two conditions may be extremely difficult both clinically and biochemically, and a diagnostic liver biopsy is usually required. We report on a Sudanese infant who presented at the age of 4 weeks with ...

AIMS To investigate the distribution of alpha and pi class glutathione S-transferases (GST) in normal fetal, neonatal, and adult liver; and to examine changes in GST expression in neonatal liver disease. METHODS alpha and pi class GST were immunolocalised in sections of formalin fixed liver tissue obtained from human fetuses (n = 21), neonates (n = 8), young children (n = 9) and adults (n = 1...
